*Can I change my own front coil springs?*?

1996 Silverado, want to put fresh coil springs in the front, is this a possible do it yourself job, if so how can it be done safely?*Can I change my own front coil springs?*?
Yes, - if you have all the tools (you'll need), and a set of spring compressors, -- and are a very careful person! Job is not that hard really, - but if you don't handle springs properly and have then properly clamped and secured,-they can ';get away';, which is real dangerous! Dangerous enough that you can kill yourself or somebody else, -- or cause severe injuries! It would be very adviseable to have a good well mounted vice if possible, - so you can securely hold springs when working with them!

Having said this, if you wan to try it,-- or check it out better, - buy yourself a manual! ';Haynes Auto Repair'; manuals' for your model and year vehicle are about as good as they come! They cost about $20 or less at most better auto supply stores, - (I buy mine at AutoZone), - even after over 55 years fixing cars, I get one for everything I buy, as it saves me time (and breaking stuff getting it apart). It is a complete maintainance manual that goes into everything except rebuilding transmissins! They will take you step by step through the job so that you don't make any ';expensive'; (or dangerous mistakes)!!

You can also borrow (or rent for nominal charge) spring compressors from AutoZone! So you don't have to invest in tools that you will use rarely!*Can I change my own front coil springs?*?
well yes you could do it yourself BUT if you have never done it before or you dont have someone there who has done it before dont do they can be very dangerous if you dont know what your doing
It's not advisable if you have never done them before and if you don't have the proper tools... You need a spring compressor and an air impact Even in the garage I've see a finger or two get broke from not paying attention..
Yes it is somewhat simple. Unless you have no idea what you are doing then it can be very deadly and I am not joking. Safe way of doing this. Jack up the vehicle under the lower control arm, remove tire, now loosen lower ball joint nut, bust it loose from the spindle. You can now remove the nut, then place the vehicle on a jack stand and slowly lower the floor jack, and I mean SLOWLY. Then the spring will come out and the reverse for installation making sure everything is tight. This applies to two wheel drive only as a four wheel drive uses torsion bars.
I agree with %26lt; Christia...%26gt; the above answer.

Just be very careful and go slooooooooooooooow, and pay attention to what you are doing!

No side distractions - like kids running around you or the dog barking to play.

Good Luck
It can be dangerous (if not fatal) if you don't know what you're doing and have never done it before.
