Lowering A Car?

I want to lower my '06 VW GTI, and was wondering what would be the best option. What needs to be changed? Originally, I was planning on changing the Springs ONLY, but someone mentioned that it will affect the shocks. Would another option be to change the Coilovers? How does this work?

just go to an auto shop and ask them to somehow shorten the shocks till you get how low you wantLowering A Car?
