454 big block from a 1989 gmc?

I just picked up a 1989 gmc truck yesterday with a 454 big block in it.. i am planning on putting this 454 into my 1970 camaro..2 things i want to know.. one is, i got the truck from a guy that did nothing to it... so how much horsepower is the orginal 454 pushing? and second is i know im going to have to change the front springs and shocks for a big block engine... but what are some other things ill have to do to it? and also when i take the engine out of the truck im going to stip it and go through it... what sould i do to make the engine put a lot of horse power and make it sound and look amazing?454 big block from a 1989 gmc?
Tell me your price and I will tell you what you can have for that price.

Engines are air pumps. The camshaft IS the great air flow governor in the engine. The power combo lies in the cylinder head and cam marriage.

Longer connecting rods breed lots of power curve fatness and reliability into the 454. 6.530 length rods make it pull like a 454 and rev like a 350. You can make 500+ streetable HP with a good pair of aftermarket Oval port heads such as Dart oval ports. AFR is the finest conventional head money can buy, but you'll spend near $3K for a pair. No R port heads or you will destroy low RPM power in a 454.

Also, you are not going to make 500+ naturally aspirated HP in that engine with stock compression.

It's time for a good mill on the head surfaces to get the chamber volume around 110CC or less. And you'll need a zero deck clearance on the block in order to make a little more compression without having to put a flame travel killing dome piston into it.

As far as cost per HP, Big BLock Chevy's are the cheapest cost per HP in the business. They're also a more reliable power combo than small blocks because you get bigger power at street able RPM's.454 big block from a 1989 gmc?
cam intake and headers. the 454 was offered in a 70 camaro and it will bolt right in. it doesnt take much to make some monster torque with a 454. the spring you might get away with leaving. if not go with the moroso trick springs. your shocks as long as they work now they will be fine. the truck 454 is not gonna be a high horse engine stock, but it is easy to get power from.
i'm guessing about original hp rating ,around 365 .(gmc dealer will tell you with one phone call) i'd just let a bona fide mechanic rebuild it.bored, bigger pistons, cam ,lifters heads headers the whole works, kick it up a notch to 'bout 550 hp ,so you can still drive it on the street.
Consider spending the money on a small block.dollar for dollar you ll be making more h.p. and at the end of the day the car will be faster.if your looking to pull heavy trailers with this car then stick with the big block.
is it carburated or Fuel injected? If its FI, you will need the computer and wiring to go with the engine

Big blocks have lots of balls, but they are heavy! For a daily driver, I would stick with a small block, handling suffers with the big block up front, but straight line fun, the big block would work
The exhaust is the only thing you absolutely have to change. Install a good set of headers and pipes. The rest will work. You need to install a good set of aluminum heads, a good cam and intake and carb. That will get you plenty of power, probably around 500 horses. There are a lots of thing you can do of course but they can be done over the years as you see fit. If you are going to drive no small block can touch it. If you are going to race, that may be a different story.
That stock 454 didnt make alot of power. 230 hp stock

For a performance engine you would need at the very least a diff cam, intake, carb, etc.

A better set of heads would really wake that engine up

A set of headers, dual exhaust, etc

To fit it in your camaro you will need big block engine mounts, rad hoses, fan, fan shroud, of course exhaust
